On this morning’s Today Show, Meredith Viera hosted a segment on accidental deaths by drug overdoses and the abuses of prescription drugs that have characterized several celebrity deaths over the past few years. The celebrity focus was used to draw attention to statistics her guests (including Julie Holland, see below) cited indicating that 1 in 5 Americans abuse prescription drugs, like Xanax (alprazolam). Alprazolam is in the same class of drugs (benzodiazapines) which are used to treat anxiety disorders (in DJ AM’s case, a justifiable fear of flying).
