Paul Giamatti, who played Pekar in the 2003 film adaptation of his classic, autobiographical work American Splendor said: "Harvey was one of the most compassionate and empathetic human beings I've ever met. He had a huge brain and an even bigger soul. And he was hilarious. He was a great artist, a true American poet, and there is no one to replace him." Mr. Pekar, 70, was found dead in his home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio today. He is said to have been suffering from multiple medical problems including prostate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure and depression.

Over the past 24 hours, stories have appeared in media sources as diverse as ETonline and CBS News about the "Master Cleanse" being Tweeted about by celebrity couple Ashton Kutcher, 32, and Demi Moore, 47. It's hard to know if we're all being punk'd by the stars of "Dude, Where's My Car" and "G.I. Jane" (among many other fine films). But it's another opportunity for us to raise consumer health awareness and medical knowledge by covering the medical facts behind the headlines.

Hitch-22, the recently-published memoir of English-American author and journalist Christopher Hitchens, begins with a sad and dark "Prologue with Premonitions" which begins with his description of a magazine article that, due to a proofreading error, refers to him as "the late Christopher Hitchens." Mr. Hitchens goes on to describe examples of other people in situations that Mark Twain famously referred to as "reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

Last month, we attended a presentation by Dr. Matthew K. Nock of Harvard University who is an expert in why people hurt themselves. We've been meaning to write about this subject ever since the recent deaths of Corey Haim and Andrew Koenig but what prompts us to cover it now are the emerging details about the final days of Phoebe Prince (picture left) who hanged herself apparently to escape the effects of relentless bullying. The subjects of bullying, suicide and self-injury are large and complicated so we will discuss these topics in a series of articles, beginning today.
