Oprah and Dr. Phil on Rihanna and Bristol: Teachable Moments

The Oprah Winfrey show on Thursday, March 12 was devoted to “…all the Rihannas of the world” meaning all women who have been affected by domestic violence. Oprah herself refers to cases in which celebrities become symbols of important social issues as teachable moments. This is very much aligned with our philosophy with regard to health and wellness issues or what we call Teachable Moments in Medicine.

Similarly, Bristol Palin and Jamie Lynn Spears have become poster children for teen pregancies which some have blamed on aspects of popular culture such as the movie Juno. Others see this “…as a great time for parents to sit down at the kitchen table and say to their kids, ‘Hey, did you hear about Bristol Palin?””
