“ER” TV Doctor Maura Tierney to Undergo Surgery for Breast Tumor

According to the Associated Press, Ms. Tierney, 44, issued a statement today saying that she’s having surgery to remove a tumor in her breast and that she will not know the exact diagnosis or course of treatment until the operation is performed. When a tumor is removed or biopsied, it is subjected to examination under a microscope and other tests by a pathologist who determines exactly what type of tumor it is. There are many types of breast tumors and not all of them are malignant. It is worth noting in this regard that the word “tumor” simply means an abnormal growth or swelling and is not synonymous with “cancer.”
