Mischa Barton on Psychiatric Hold Following “Freak Out”

According to US Magazine and Access Hollywood, 23 year-old British actress Mischa Barton, called police to assist her with a “medical issue.” She was placed by the police on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold and transferred to Cedar-Sinai Medical Center. Ms. Barton was schedule to attend the premier of her new movie Homecoming.

Ms. Barton has a history of substance abuse, had been through drug rehabilitation and was serving a 36-month probation. It is not currently known whether or not her “medical condition” (also described as a “freak out”) was drug-related.

California Welfare and Institutions Code Section 5150-5157 reads: “When any person, as a result of mental disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled, a peace officer, member of the attending staff, as defined by regulation, of an evaluation facility designated by the county, designated members of a mobile crisis team provided by Section 5651.7, or other professional person designated by the county may, upon probable cause, take, or cause to be taken, the person into custody and place him or her in a facility designated by the county and approved by the State Department of Mental Health as a facility for 72-hour treatment and evaluation.”

Mark Boguski, M.D., Ph.D. is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and is a member of the Society for Participatory Medicine, "a movement in which networked patients shift from being mere passengers to responsible drivers of their health" and in which professional health care providers encourage "empowered patients" and value them as full partners in managing their health and wellness.
