Actor James Avery, probably best known for his role as Uncle Phil in the 1990’s sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died at the age of 68. Avery died New Years Eve of complications from open heart surgery. His rep, Toni Benson, told CNN that Avery had the surgery on November 11. What specific procedure he underwent was not revealed.
Alfonso RIbeiro, who played Avery’s son Carlton on Fresh Prince, tweeted:
“I’m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.”
Condolences from other cast members quickly followed suit, including Tatiana Ali, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Will and Jada Pinket Smith.
Did you know that James Avery suffered from diabetes for many years? And that he was a Celebrity Ambassador for the Entertainment Industries Council for their diabetes campaign encouraging people to take better control of their health?
R.I.P. James, and thanks for your work as diabetes advocate!
